Coverage
Know what you are comparing
The cheapest premium is not always the cheapest year. Here is what sits behind the number.
- Liability
- Pays for injury and property damage you cause to others. Required in nearly every state, and the minimum is often far below what a serious accident costs.
- Collision
- Repairs or replaces your own car after a crash, whoever was at fault. Usually required while you are financing or leasing.
- Comprehensive
- Covers the damage that has nothing to do with driving: theft, hail, flood, fire, falling branches, a cracked windshield.
- Uninsured motorist
- Steps in when the driver who hit you has no insurance or not enough of it. Often the cheapest meaningful coverage on the page.
- Medical payments / PIP
- Helps with medical bills for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of fault. Required in some states.
- Roadside and rental
- Towing, jump starts, lockouts, and a car to drive while yours is in the shop. Small add-ons that decide how a bad day goes.
Why compare
Same driver, same car, very different prices
Every insurer weighs risk with its own formula. Two carriers can look at the identical driver and land hundreds of dollars apart, which is exactly why a single quote tells you nothing about what you should be paying.
- 01
Your rate drifts even when you do not
Insurers refile rates regularly. A price that was competitive when you signed up quietly stops being competitive, and renewal notices rarely spell that out.
- 02
Life changes move the number
Moving, a new car, a shorter commute, a birthday, an accident dropping off your record, adding a driver: each one can reshuffle who is cheapest for you.
- 03
Discounts are not automatic
Multi-policy, safe driver, low mileage, good student, paid-in-full, telematics. You generally get them by asking for them, not by waiting.
- 04
One search, many carriers
Instead of filling out the same form on six different websites, you answer once and see what the market says.
